A?fob?is an adornment or a seal that?hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself?making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.?The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A wonderful and very unusual family crest fob from the Georgian (ca1830) era! This fantastic handmade piece is made of steel and features an ornate seal bottom. Beginning with a loop for hanging, the fob is comprised of a decorative topper which serves as a handle for the piece. The seal has two family crests which have been placed together on the same seal, most likely the result of a marriage. The crest has images that include leaves, lions, horseshoes, and a crown, among other symbols. A fabulous historical piece, it would look beautiful worn on a sterling chain, and would be a perfect addition to any fob collection!
Measurements:??The fob hangs approximately 1 1/4" long and is approximately 3/8" at its thickest point. The oval seal at the bottom measures approximately 1" by 7/8".
Condition:?The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the steel fob.
